A summer of ballet on film

The Carmike Royal Palm 20 in Bradenton has announced its summer slate of ballet performances on film, part of its effort to provide diverse, alternative programming.

"Ballet from the Royal Opera," will include five full length ballets performed by the Royal Ballet and filmed live at Covent Garden in London.

Kenneth MacMillan's "Manon," the tale of an impulsive young woman who is drawn into a world of male desire, danced to the music of Jules Massenet, will be shown Thursday, May 28 at 7 p.m.

Christopher Wheeldon's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," to a Joby Talbot score, will screen at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 11.

On Thursday, June 25, Wheeldon's newest creation, "The Winter's Tale," three-act ballet adaptation of Shakespeare's tale of love, loss and reconciliation, will be shown at 7 p.m.

The Romantic classic, "Swan Lake," wit additions to the original Marius Petipa choreography by Frederick Ashton and David Bintley and the well-known Tchaikovsky score, will screen on Thursday, July 9 at 7 p.m.

The final screening of the summer will take place on Thursday, July 23 at 7 p.m., with the family favorite, "La Fille mal Gardée," choreographed by Ashton, with music by Ferdinand Hérold.

Tickets, $12.50-$15, can be purchased at www.fandango.com or at the theater, which is located 5125 26th St. W, at the intersection of U.S. 301 and SR 70 in Bradenton. The theater has recently undergone major renovations, including new seating and a new sound system.
