The beer community is close-knit. Brewers that you would think of as competitors help each other, just because they are good people.

Here's a perfect example: Darwin Brewing Co. (803 17th Ave. W., Bradenton) is hosting a barbecue brunch and silent auction from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday to benefit their brewer Mike Rogers, who is being treated for cancer. The local beer world is coming together to help Rogers, whose medical bills are piling up.

Here's the menu by Chef Darwin Santa Maria of Darwin's on 4th:

Catalan Paella Mixta
Seafood Fideua (Catalan traditional dish)
Peruvian Salsas for BBQ Pork
Salsa Criolla
Rocoto (extra spicy)
Peruvian Ceviches with Leche de Tigre
Peruvian Tapas

Places like Cigar City Brewing, Green Bench Brewing, Creative Loafing, Geraldson Community Farm have donated beer, swag, gift certificates and more to the silent auction.

A $10 donation will get you in. All of the proceeds will benefit Rogers. You can also make a donation on his youcaring.com page and learn more at the event's Facebook page.
